5G Mobility

5G: Technology

5G Mobility

5G will enable completely new functions for in-car and out-car applications. In the short-term it will revolutionise in-car infotainment and enhanced multimedia. In the near future we can expect 5G to contribute to V2X communication, optimising the driving experience and enabling the future of autonomous vehicles.

As modern vehicles become smarter, technological advancements are being developed in on-board computing power, sensor networks and communication systems. Applications are devoted to improving driver and passenger experience, specifically in; vehicle location, driver behavior, engine diagnostics and vehicle activity (telematics), and infotainment. All of these systems rely on cellular connectivity with more and more focus on the development of 5G technology.

Communication and connectivity are key to the development of autonomous vehicles. Cellular-based technologies will be essential to transforming the entire mobility ecosystem thanks to V2X (vehicle-to-everything communication). This new protocol allows vehicles to communicate with other vehicles (V2V), pedestrians (V2P), networks (V2N), and the surrounding infrastructure (V2I).

With the development of 5G technology we will see changes in the radio access network with small cells, the foundation of the 5G network being rolled in many locations. The deployment of this communication infrastructure, supporting C-V2X technology, will offer superior performance to enable connected vehicles to communicate with transport infrastructure. This will offer many benefits such as less congestion, reduced emissions, and a smoother driving experience.

Improving safety

The high-reliability and low-latency features of 5G will improve safety on roads by facilitating the flow of information between vehicles, pedestrians and road infrastructure. This will enable connected vehicles to anticipate and avoid dangerous situations, reducing collisions and potentially saving lives.

Improving driving experience

Driver experience will be greatly improved with real-time traffic information that can save drivers both time and money, such as; finding the closest free parking space or enabling predictive maintenance. Passengers will also likely benefit with the next-generation of infotainment services. High quality video streaming or joining video conference calls will all be possible during your journey.

5G IoT Intelligent Mobility (V2X, C2X)

In the short term a key area for Automotive 5G will be the sharing of real-time communication, providing interconnected data on traffic and road conditions. 5G-based V2X will be introduced as part of 3GPP Rel-16 this year, and is likely to provide many benefits to users as well as improving road safety.

In Vehicle entertainment / infotainment

5G high-data-rate capabilities will herald improved driver and passenger experience with streamlined delivery of information such as data intensive video or music streaming. Current applications will be enhanced to include in-car retail, AR/VR navigation, enhanced driver feedback, and a host of other sophisticated in-vehicle applications.
