On-site Report from the Murata Manufacturing Booth at the Automotive Engineering Exposition 2026: Showcasing Technologies for the New Mobility Society

On May 27, 2026, Murata Manufacturing (hereinafter "Murata") exhibited at the Automotive Engineering Exposition 2026. This exposition is the largest automotive technology exhibition in Japan. At the exhibition, we showcased technologies with a view to the next-generation mobility society. Here, we introduce some of the items we exhibited that attracted a great deal of attention. These items include a device that contributes to autonomous driving with short-range detection.

Metamaterials are artificial substances that behave in ways not found in substances in the natural world. They control the reflection, transmission, and other properties of electromagnetic waves (light and radio waves), sound waves, and similar. We introduce here the types, usage examples, and prospects of metamaterials. We also look at the Ultrasound Transmission Metamaterial developed by Murata Manufacturing.

“Ultrasound Transmission Metamaterial” that Expands the Range of Places where Ultrasonic Sensors Can Be Used to Include Medicine and Automobiles

Murata Manufacturing has developed a new “ultrasound transmission metamaterial” technology with the potential to expand the range of places where ultrasonic sensors can be used. Previous ultrasonic sensors were unable to measure target objects located on the other side of a barrier made of a material such as metal or resin. The new ultrasonic metamaterial eliminates these limitations on measurement and has the potential to spur innovation in a variety of areas such as medical, automotive, and social infrastructure.
