5G Massive IoT

5G: Technology

5G Massive IoT

5G – Massive IoT will likely account for over half of 5G cellular IoT connections. This is due to the common requirement for long battery life, deep coverage and low total cost of ownership (TCO) across larger application areas like asset management, energy & utilities and smart cities.

The term “Massive IoT” appropriately describes the big bang of new IoT enabled devices that will emerge with the implementation of 5G. The IMT-2020 standard for 4G LPWA technology was set for 60K+ devices per square kilometer, 5G minimum connection density is set at 1 million devices at the same size coverage.

To support the big bang the IoT standard will need to be both scalable and versatile to ensure enough capacity and network efficiency thus smoothly connecting millions of devices whilst providing a range of new features such as improved battery life, wider coverage. The expansion will herald a range of new applications signaling a new digital age. The evolving standards of 3GPP`s specification road map will evolve.

3GPP’s specification roadmap for Massive IoT will not only benefit the network but also support improvement of devices such as reducing cost, improved battery-life and wider coverage.
5G Massive IoT is likely to be a catalyst to innovation for a number of industries including Automotive, Security, Industry 4.0, Smart Cities, and Medical.

5G: Smart Factories, IIoT/Industry 4.0

As we enter Industry 4.0 manufacturers are opting for more flexible, efficient and sustainable production lines. 5G IoT is a key enabler for this shift, offering manufacturing companies and their supply chain partners improved visibility over their whole ecosystem and setting the foundation for technologies such as predictive maintenance, private networks and edge intelligence.
